Sleep Medicine

The team that established the first sleep center in Virginia continues to offer the latest in sleep medicine at the new Fort Norfolk facility. Our experts have been diagnosing, treating and researching sleep disorders longer than anyone else in the area. Our personalized treatment plans can help you get back to sleep - and back to life.

There are many different types of sleep disorders, generally classified into one of three different types:

  • Lack of sleep - Insomnia
  • Disturbed sleep - Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Excessive sleep - Narcolepsy

In most cases, sleep disorders can be easily managed once they are properly diagnosed. Our state-of-the-art facility and our nationally recognized board-certified physicians and clinicians diagnose and treat all types of sleep disorders — including snoring, sleep apnea, restless legs and insomnia.

Do you have a sleep disorder?
Talk to your doctor if you have one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Consistent tiredness/fatigue during the day
  • Loud snoring
  • Snoring interrupted by pauses in breathing
  • High blood pressure
  • Frequent awakenings at night
  • Gasping or choking at night
  • Waking up with palpitations
  • Morning headaches

These may be signs and symptoms of a sleep disorder. Talk to your physician for advice. If your doctor finds a sleep study is needed, you can trust EVMS Sleep Medicine experts. The sleep medicine center is staffed by a team of medical experts who are true sleep scientists with extensive training. All are physician educators as faculty members at EVMS. The sleep facility is a four bedroom center where patients can be comfortably evaluated overnight and/or examined and tested during the day. They also conduct research on normal sleepers and have tested most sleeping pills marketed today.

In addition, driving simulation research is conducted to evaluate sleepiness and highway safety.
